  4. Regular review contacts with the customer.

Program Overview

The Navajo Nation Program for Self Reliance is committed to coordinating its activities with other Tribal and State agencies as well as the private sectors to foster positive changes in the customers.

The Navajo Nation Program for Self Reliance is also responsible for developing a program to meet the needs of management for training staff members and for setting guidelines that will promote the values of the Navajo People.

Quality assurance of program compliance is determined through regular and periodic evaluations. Each staff member is responsible for providing effective and supportive assistance to Customers and adhering to the goals of helping each Customer reach his/her full potential. This is accomplished by closely mentoring each Customer.

Customers will be responsible to provide accurate and current information regarding their eligibility. Customers must demonstrate effort and willingness to become financially independent.

The Navajo Nation Program for Self Reliance promotes the development of social and economic responsibility as well as self-sufficiency in families and individuals through well-defined and supportive activities.

Culturally sensitive services are offered to Navajo Customers living on the Navajo Nation and within the Navajo Nation Service Delivery Area.

Navajo culture is incorporated into the program by promoting the basic life principles of the Navajo people. These basic principles form the Pathway to Self-Reliance model that consists of four significant life activities: Thinking, Planning, Doing, and Growing (Section 500, 600, 700, and 800, respectively).

They represent the steps individuals and families must take in order to become self-sufficient. The program utilizes these four activities to foster individualized plans that will help develop personal responsibility and to move the Customers toward self-sufficiency.

The program staff is required to mentor Customers as they work towards the goals they have set. These goals are defined in a “Personal Responsibility Plan” (Section 607.4). Every Customer is required to complete a “Personal Responsibility Plan” regardless of the age of the parent, child or children.

The “Personal Responsibility Plan” is used to guide the Customer through progressive stages that include the application process, work and program orientation, eligibility and payment determination, cash disbursement, referral, Customer’s job search, work activity, evaluation and assessment, need for penalties or hearings, reporting and other program activities.
